‘‘MOTTAINAI’’

FINAL PROJECT

PROJECT

CONCEPT

Details & Materials

The details incorporated into the collection are a culmination of my observations of OpéraSPORT's existing elements and the preferences of the target audience, combined with insights gleaned from my interview with a lector in japanese culture.

Drawing inspiration from "A Dictionary of Color Combinations" by Sanzo Wada, a renowned kimono designer and educator from 1930s Japan, my color choices reflect a blend of traditional Japanese color palettes with modern sensibilities. This fusion captures the essence of a nation in transition, absorbing Western influences while staying rooted in its rich cultural heritage.

The collection will feature a juxtaposition of denim and silk, seamlessly blending the raw and street aesthetic with the delicate and feminine. Additionally, cotton and wool will be incorporated to offer versatility and texture.

In response to the pervasive issue of fast fashion, this project aims to create a sustainable capsule collection for the brand OpéraSPORT. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Mottainai, which translates to "what a waste" and encompasses the notion of shame associated with wastefulness, advocating waste reduction, and grounded in Japanese aesthetics, the collection seeks to be both visually appealing and environmentally responsible.

Japanese aesthetics, particularly Mottainai, guide my designs, incorporating simplicity, clean lines, and a fascination with asymmetry. Red shades like shiro add energy and symbolism. Techniques such as Sashiko, Boro, and Shibori provide depth, authenticity, and craftsmanship.

Prioritizing aesthetic sustainability, I focus on recycled denim materials and Sashiko-boro stitching, emphasizing environmental consciousness and a unique aesthetic telling the story of recycled materials. Storytelling is sharing the design process and material history, inviting consumers to form a personal bond with the collection.

Overall, my capsule collection fuses OpéraSPORT’s design DNA, Japanese aesthetics, and sustainability. It is a capsule collection with a depth of history and craftsmanship.
