‘‘MOTTAINAI’’

FINAL PROJECT

PROJeCT

CONCEPT

In response to the pervasive issue of fast fashion, this project aims to create a sustainable capsule collection for the brand OpéraSPORT. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Mottainai, which translates to "what a waste" and encompasses the notion of shame associated with wastefulness, advocating waste reduction, and grounded in Japanese aesthetics, the collection seeks to be both visually appealing and environmentally responsible.

Japanese aesthetics, particularly Mottainai, guide my designs, incorporating simplicity, clean lines, and a fascination with asymmetry. Red shades like shiro add energy and symbolism. Techniques such as Sashiko, Boro, and Shibori provide depth, authenticity, and craftsmanship.

Prioritizing aesthetic sustainability, I focus on recycled denim materials and Sashiko-boro stitching, emphasizing environmental consciousness and a unique aesthetic telling the story of recycled materials. Storytelling is sharing the design process and material history, inviting consumers to form a personal bond with the collection.

Overall, my capsule collection fuses OpéraSPORT’s design DNA, Japanese aesthetics, and sustainability. It is a capsule collection with a depth of history and craftsmanship.

INDIGO & SHIBORI TECHNIQUES

Throughout the development of my the MOTTAINAI capsule collection for OpéraSPORT, I delved into the intricate world of Shibori techniques and indigo dyeing. Shibori, a traditional Japanese dyeing method, involves various ways of manipulating fabric before dyeing to create unique patterns and textures. This exploration was a meticulous process, involving numerous experiments and trials to ensure that the chosen techniques seamlessly complemented the collection's aesthetic and narrative.
